Before taking the plunge, it is worth your while to understand the licensing process you will undertake.
Before embarking on a career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) it’s important to understand what is involved in the licensing process you will need to complete in order to qualify. Where the AMO (Aircraft Maintenance Organisation) certification process will need to comply with the South African Civil Aviation Authority, prospective Aircraft Maintenance engineers should be careful to select only a SACAA approved Aviation Technical Training Centre.
Whether you want to study AME or any of the associated support staff training courses such as:
- store keeping
- aviation quality assurance
- maintenance planning
- flight operations officer
- computer literacy
- technical records training
Students will be well served to be aware of the necessary accreditations and qualification process an approved maintenance organization needs, in order to ensure you are receiving the most relevant and official training possible.
There are five (5) steps to an AMO accreditation process, each of which follow the necessary programs and systems in order to comply with the SACAA for the proper and comprehensive evaluation and testing of aircrafts maintenance students.
- Step 1: Pre-application Phase
The AMO must complete a pre-assessment statement, the actual application and has an Airworthiness Inspector assigned.
- Step 2: Formal Application Phase
During this time the inspectorate team reviews the eligibility of the application.
- Step 3: Document Compliance Phase
The Inspectorate now reviews documents, manuals and other elements of the application.
- Step 4: Demonstration and Inspection Phase
The Inspectorate will now visit the associated facilities for a full inspection. This process will also include the review of all equipment, training processes and a practical demonstration of the applicant’s ability.
- Step 5: Certification Phase
The final step is the certification approval phase that will include the operations specifications and the AMO certificate.
Often considered as the unsung heroes of aviation, aircraft maintenance technicians ensure that safety standards and aircraft controls are uncompromised. While sometimes flying just below the radar, qualified AME’s are responsible for the safe passage of every flight, before, during and post an aircraft takes to the sky.
Given the intricacies of the profession and the various systems, controls and aeronautics of various aircrafts, students should also spend time considering the different types of training available across the aircraft engineering industry.
Debela DTM offers some of the highest standards in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering courses available. Given the superiority of Debela Aviation and maintenance planning training, qualified AME’s and the likes of support staff can be assured a successful, long term career in the field.
The DTM Training course schedule includes (but is not limited to):
- The quality assurance for general aircrafts and helicopters (rotorcraft)
- Safety management systems
- General airframe structures, hydraulics and associated systems across various aircrafts
- General Avionics
